Over the course of one of our semesters in the MFA Production Design course at AFI, we are asked to select an existing TV series and redesign the Pilot Episode without referring to the actual series design.
I picked the TV Series "Awake/REM". The logline was intriguing, the idea of having to design two parallel realities for one character seemed challenging to me.
As part of the project, we have to identify and design one permanent set and one swing set on a soundstage we get to pick. My approach to the design was to let the architecture dictate the state of emotion of the characters mind.
For the Permanent set, I designed a police station located in Downtown LA, and for the Swing set I designed two therapists offices in two parallel realities, in Pasadena.
